Mobile Orientation

Mobile orientation is a secondary element. It is recommended to include in your digital product.

Fixed displays are useful for certain orientations depending on how the user is displaying their particular device. Usually, this should be a choice. A user should have the option of altering their own orientation and locking it as most tablets and smartphones allow. Otherwise, content such as video or text may become restricted, poorly viewed or unreadable by almost anyone, especially those with low vision issues. There are a few instances where fixed orientation is mandated.

Summary Points:

  • The author of the content should suggest the orientation

  • Orientation can effect users with low vision

  • Media such as a car racing game, demand a landscape display

  • Reading text is rarely done in landscape mode unless by a person with low vision who needs large fonts

  • A banking app will require landscape mode for mobile check deposits
