A user should have the ability to pause, stop and play audio if it exceeds 3 seconds regardless of the medium. Inability to pause audio can effect people who use screen readers. This suggested rule also applies to people who have difficulty focusing, such as those with ADHD.

Summary Points:

  • A keyboard should suffice as the primary volume control

  • Pausing, stopping or playing audio includes a volume control slide that can drop to zero within the media

  • Pausing, stopping or playing audio includes buttons that allow this to occur

  • Audio control icons are distinctly established with a visual bias after decades of interface design
